GOLDEN DORADO ARGENTINA

We Know the Best Programs in Patagonia Argentina for Fly Fishing for Golden Dorado

We tell you the perfect reason to fish for Golden Dorado in freshwaters

Golden Dorado, the tiger of the rivers. This is how the best fish on the planet for streamer fishing was nicknamed in Argentina. It’s the only fish that can reach levels of voracity similar to a piranha. When the dorado is active to hunt, its dorsal fin rises and it shoots out with its tail, swipes sideways, and then flips back downstream to pursue its prey. The dorado spends its time sheltering among sticks and rocks on the riverbanks.

History of this Great Golden Dorado

That dorado was a record for the season and the largest I’ve caught in the Paraná River. We travel to the area three or four times a year; we explore the entire Paraná basin and the surrounding rivers. We found some flies much more effective than others, and we also spent a long time searching for small branches where fishing was easier and dorados were more abundant. Along the banks of the Paraná River itself —the main channel —we observed a phenomenon indicating that the current flows there. It seems like a mighty, very wild river, with many nooks and crannies, small pools, and in between, gigantic lagoons. Inside one of these lagoons, there were large whirlpools against the shore, and on the other side, a small stream formed along the coast, where there was bait. The guide asked us to cast upstream and, when we reached the bait, to move the fly to tempt the dorado feeding. With my intuition and years of guiding large browns, I realized that if there were small dorados, a larger dorado or another species might be eating them. So, as I pulled toward shore, I waited for the guide to let me cast so I could cross to the other side. Without hesitation, when I realized his resistance was due to his being a newer guide, I turned and began moving toward the center. On the second cast, the rod almost slipped from my hands, the line burned my fingers, and my friend Juan Pablo shouted, «It’s huge, it’s huge!» When it came to fighting a dorado like that, I couldn’t believe my face. I was a little worried about losing it, since the leaders we used weren’t as well-prepared for such large dorados, and because the jaw of a fish that size is more challenging to handle. I had a fair amount of experience, but not the kind I have today. At that point, I spent about fifteen or twenty minutes fighting the dorado until I was able to pull it up against the boat. The guide told me it was the biggest one he’d ever seen. My friend gave me a big hug, took a few photos, and I felt and thought to myself, This is enough. It was the last time I saw such a large dorado, and I thanked my friend and guide, Víctor, who accompanied me on this adventure.

Golden Dorado in Argentina

The best freshwater fish in Argentina

Learn about the freshwater fish species that abound in Argentina's Parana River

Golden Dorado argentina

The golden dorado (Salminus brasiliensis), known as the «river tiger,» is an emblematic freshwater fish of South America, famous for its strength and metallic golden-yellow color. It has a robust body, a large head, and powerful jaws, with a distinctive tail marked by a dark triangular spot. It can grow to over 80 cm and reach records of over 19 kg, such as the specimen extracted in 1999 from the Juramento River. It lives mainly in rivers in Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, Bolivia, and Brazil, where it performs reproductive migrations between October and April. Its fish-eating diet, based on shad, bream, and mojarra, makes it an apex predator. It is highly prized in sport fishing, especially with fly and spinning, with destinations such as Corrientes, Misiones, Santa Fe, Entre Ríos, and Buenos Aires standing out. The golden dorado is part of the regional cultural and tourist identity, which is why catch-and-release fishing is currently encouraged to protect it.

The wolffish (Hoplias malabaricus), also known as the tararira, is a predatory fish that is gaining increasing popularity in sport fishing in Argentina. It is found in rivers and lagoons along the coast, especially in Corrientes, Entre Ríos, and Misiones. It used to be an accidental catch, but today there are guided excursions to search for it. Its main attraction is its aggressive bites and the intense fights it offers anglers. It can be caught using spinning or fly fishing, with flies such as poppers and streamers being very effective. It is essential to use steel leaders to avoid cuts and take advantage of the warm-water season. Fishing for wolffish in Argentina is a pure adrenaline rush and an experience that combines technique, emotion, and the natural world.

The chafalote (Raphiodon vulpinus), known as the river vampire, ghost fish, or machete fish, is a freshwater predator characteristic of the La Plata basin.
Its most striking feature is its long fangs and slender body, which make it swift and fearsome.
It is a highly prized sport fish, famous for its acrobatic leaps and ability to escape the hook.
The most commonly used technique for catching it is spinning with bright lures that imitate small fish.
Although it is exciting to catch, it is not consumed due to its large number of bones.
It is found primarily in rivers like the Paraná, and is most active during the warmer seasons.
Due to its resilience and spectacular appearance, the chafalote is considered one of the most challenging fish for sport fishermen.

We had a wonderful day fly fishing in May with Juanito. I am new to fly fishing and my boyfriend is experienced, and Juanito was able to easily accommodate us both. We were at the end of the season and unfortunately did not catch anything, but it was still the highlight of our trip. The lunch was excellent (vegetarian option even provided upon request) and the overall experience was top notch! Price is very reasonable for a once in a lifetime experience in a beautiful place with a fantastic guide. We highly recommend!

I had a fantastic day with Trout Bariloche and their guide Juanito, who understood exactly when to help and when to step back. Top service, great local knowledge of the waters, where and what the fish would take. Dry fly fishing was great with several nice browns to the net. If you are in the area and look for great fishing, they are as good is it gets!

I had a great day fishing Rio Manso with Juanito in early December! I was a single female traveler with limited fly fishing experience, so Rio Manso was recommended for my skill level and it worked out great. I caught 10-15 fish, mostly rainbows and a brown, nothing huge but bigger than I usually catch in Maine so a big success in my book! Juanito was a great guide and gave very helpful and easy to follow tips to improve my casting and land the fish.

Great guide, beautiful river, plentiful trout. Our day drifting the Limay was productive and insightful. Juanito our guide took his time providing my wife with excellent casting instruction and took his time putting us over many good holds. Aside from that the river is beautiful and the weather was perfect. Juanito was also a font of local information and we had a wonderful time. Highly recommend

The guys at Trout Bariloche love what they do, and who can blame them?! Stunningly beautiful, crystal clear river, dropping through steep canyons and loaded with hungry, strong rainbows and browns. From the reservation process to the pick up, the instructions geared towards varied skill and experience levels, the onsite prepared lunches, dinners, and the top notch accommodations, literally every detail is considered. My 12 year old son and I had an absolutely fantastic, bucket list time fly fishing Argentina. We caught a ton of fish, vastly improved our skills and enjoyed every minute of it. We’re beyond appreciative of the staff and guides, and can’t wait to return. Best trip ever!

I had an absolutely fantastic day fishing the Rio Manso with Juan and Miguel. My fly fishing skills certainly required some improvement, and their tuition was patient and thorough, and I felt I improved significantly by the end of the trip. We caught fish pretty much non-stop for the entire day, surrounded by the most incredible Patagonian scenery. The lunch was also excellent. Easily one of the highlights of my 4 month trip in South America. Will definitely be booking another trip when I return to Argentina!

FISHING
Mahi-mahi are extraordinary hunters. They are always on the lookout for easy prey that passes through their catch area (even a smaller dorado!). They like moving waters and most often lurk near river structures.
Fishing is done from new boats, specially designed for fly fishing, with two casting platforms that allow two anglers to easily cast and fish simultaneously, with an electric motor remotely operated by the guide.
In addition to dorado fishing, there is also the opportunity to catch other exciting fish, such as pacu, pira pita, tararira, surubí, chafalote, and other freshwater species, which offer fantastic fishing experiences.
Fishing is typically done with 8- or 9-gauge rods (fast-action rods are recommended), using floating and sinking lines of varying densities and sinking speeds. While regular lines can work well, during the summer months, the weather can be very hot and tropical, so lines that can convert a large fly are recommended. Fishing for Pira Pita and Tararira is best done with 5/6 gauge floating lines.

Iguazu Waterfalls: Guide to Visiting One of the 7 Natural Wonders

Visiting Iguazu Falls is an experience that extends far beyond being just a tourist destination. It’s a natural spectacle so overwhelming that it remains forever etched in your memory. In my case, it was a must-see on your travel list: the magnitude of the water tumbling through the jungle and the pure air you breathe make you immediately understand why it’s a World Heritage Site and one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature.

Why are Iguazu Falls so special?

World Heritage and Natural Wonder

Located on the border between Argentina and Brazil, the falls are part of two protected national parks: Iguazú National Park (Argentina) and Iguaçu National Park (Brazil). Both are UNESCO World Heritage Sites and are considered one of the greatest natural wonders of the planet. The most striking feature is the exuberant flow of water cascading through more than 275 waterfalls, set amidst a subtropical rainforest. Walking along the walkways, you not only hear the roar of the water but also enjoy the area’s biodiversity: monkeys, exotic birds, and coatis appear at every turn.

The best of the Argentine side

The Argentine side offers a more immersive experience. The walkways literally take you over the water and bring you closer to the main waterfalls. Devil’s Throat, with its deafening roar, is a unique spectacle.

Where are they and how to get to Iguazú?

Arriving from Buenos Aires

The most common way is to fly from Buenos Aires to Puerto Iguazú (Argentine side). The flight takes less than two hours, with several daily departures available. From the airport, a taxi will take you to the city or the park entrance in just a few minutes.

What to see and do in Iguazú National Park

Devil's Throat: the star of the tour

The most famous spot. A balcony places you right in front of the park’s most impressive waterfall. It’s impossible not to be mesmerized by the sight of that mass of water tumbling with immeasurable force.

Trails and walkways with spectacular views

The Argentine park has several circuits: the Upper Walkway, the Lower Walkway, and the Jungle Ecological Train, which takes you to Devil’s Throat. All offer different perspectives, from walking along the river to feeling the mist on your face.

Fauna and flora: monkeys, coatis and more

Coatis, toucans, colorful butterflies, and, with a bit of luck, monkeys appear among the trees on every hike. On my visit, the animal encounters along the way made the walk even more special.

Where to stay near Iguazú

Options in Puerto Iguazú (Argentina)

The city of Puerto Iguazú offers a range of accommodations, from budget hostels to boutique hotels. It’s the perfect base for enjoying local restaurants and culture.
There are exclusive options within the parks, such as the Gran Meliá Iguazú.

Frequently Asked Questions About Iguazu Falls

Caminito Street, Buenos Aires: History, Culture, and What to See in La Boca

Visiting Buenos Aires without stopping by Caminito is like missing a piece of the porteño soul. This corner of the La Boca neighborhood combines history, color, tango, soccer, and gastronomy in an unforgettable experience. It’s enchanting to stroll through its picturesque streets, feel the warmth of its people, and end the afternoon with a delicious barbecue and wine.

What is Caminito and why is it so famous?

Caminito is an open-air museum street located in the La Boca neighborhood. It became world-famous for its brightly painted tin houses, for being the birthplace of artists, and for inspiring the famous tango «Caminito.» Today, thousands of tourists visit it each year, attracted by its unique blend of cultural tradition and festive atmosphere.

Beyond being a tourist attraction, it still exudes neighborhood life: neighbors drinking mate on the sidewalk, artisans performing live shows, and musicians who inspire people to dance to an improvised tango.

History of El Caminito and the La Boca Neighborhood

The origins of the La Boca neighborhood are linked to Italian immigrants, particularly those from Genoa, who arrived at the end of the 19th century. They built houses with sheet metal and wood and painted them with leftover paint from ships. This gave rise to the colorful aesthetic that is now a symbol of the neighborhood.

Caminito Street, in particular, was revived in the 1950s thanks to artist Benito Quinquela Martín, who promoted the restoration of the area and turned it into an open-air museum. Since then, Caminito has been a living tribute to art, immigration, and the Boca spirit.

Colorful Houses, street art, and live tango

One of Caminito’s most fantastic attractions is its multicolored facades. Every corner is a picture-perfect postcard, and many facades are decorated with murals or sculptures depicting typical scenes from Buenos Aires’ life.

It’s also common to find tango couples dancing in the street, inviting tourists to join in for a photo or enjoy the spectacle. I remember spending a long time watching a guitarist improvise while two dancers twirled to the rhythm of the bandoneon. It was a unique moment and, without a doubt, a living tribute to the tradition popularized by Carlos Gardel, the great ambassador of tango throughout the world. His legacy lives on in every note that plays in Caminito.

What to do in Caminito: Recommended Tours and Walks

The best way to explore Caminito is on foot. You can do it on your own or sign up for one of the tours, which include La Boca, San Telmo, and even a boat ride on the Riachuelo.

I recommend a guided tour, as the guides share historical and current anecdotes, such as Caminito’s role in popular culture and how it has changed over the years. They also know the best places to take photos without the crowds.

Caminito and the passion for football: tribute to Diego Maradona

You can’t talk about La Boca without mentioning football and the legendary Diego Maradona. Very close to Caminito is La Bombonera, Boca Juniors’ stadium. In the area, you’ll find murals, graffiti, and statues honoring Maradona, the neighborhood’s eternal idol.

Golden Dorado in Argentina:
the tiger of the rivers

To speak of the golden dorado in Argentina is to talk of one of the most fascinating fish on the planet. Ferocious, elegant, and defiant, this fish is known as the tiger of the rivers for its wild nature and its ability to ambush prey. It’s no coincidence that anglers from all over the world travel to the Paraná River and its tributaries to try to confront this predator.

What is golden dorado and why is it unique?

The golden dorado (Salminus brasiliensis) is a freshwater fish native to South America, especially abundant in Argentina. Its metallic golden body makes it unmistakable, but what truly distinguishes it is its voracity.

In my experience, it’s the only fish that can display behavior as aggressive as a piranha: when in hunting mode, it raises its dorsal fin, extends its tail, and sways before launching downstream with impressive power.

It’s no exaggeration to say that every encounter with a dorado is a shock of strength and adrenaline.

The golden dorado in Argentina isn’t just a fish: it’s an experience. From the roar of its attack to the golden beauty of its body in the sun, every encounter is an unforgettable memory.

And although we call it the tiger of the rivers, for many anglers it’s also a teacher: it teaches patience, respect for nature, and the importance of giving back to the water what it gives us.

The Paraná River: the heart of the Argentina golden dorado

The Paraná River is the second longest in South America, after the Amazon, and flows through Brazil, Paraguay, and Argentina until it flows into the Río de la Plata. It is the backbone of sport fishing in the country and the primary habitat of the golden dorado.

In its Argentine stretch, the Paraná offers very different landscapes:

  • Upper Paraná (Misiones and Corrientes): fast-flowing waters, rapids, and jungle environments where the dorado show off their full power.
  • Middle Paraná (Santa Fe and Entre Ríos): a labyrinth of islands, lagoons, and rapids that concentrate large numbers of dorado and other species. Some of the largest specimens in the country are found here.
  • Lower Paraná (Buenos Aires): wider, calmer waters that form the Delta, a unique ecosystem with channels, streams, and gallery forest areas, where the dorado hide among branches and roots.

The Paraná is not just a river: it is a system of life that connects economies, communities, and cultures. For fishermen, it represents an immense territory full of opportunities and challenges. I’ve seen how, in a matter of seconds, a dorado goes from sitting still on the bank to violently launching itself at the lure, vibrating the rod from start to finish.

The best destinations for golden dorado fishing in Argentina

Argentina offers diverse settings for this fishing, but some provinces stand out:

Corrientes: Considered the world epicenter of the golden dorado, fishing here is intense in every corner and backwater of the Paraná River. Local guides often recommend using large, sturdy streamers, as the specimens from this region are famous for their size and power. Fishing in Corrientes isn’t just a sport; it’s also about tradition and hospitality, with entire towns centered around sport fishing.

Misiones and Entre Ríos: These are territories with a long fishing tradition. In Misiones, the jungle-lined rivers with fast-flowing waters offer a unique challenge, ideal for fly-fishers with streamers. Entre Ríos, on the other hand, provides a broader and more varied landscape than Paraná, where dorado coexist with species like surubí and pacu. Fishing here means intense days in waters steeped in history and fishing culture.

Santa Fe and Buenos Aires: In these provinces, the Paraná River becomes a great fishing school. In Santa Fe, boat trips on the Middle Paraná River are legendary: dorados hunting between islands, surubíes on the prowl, and days that combine sport and camaraderie. In Buenos Aires, especially in the Paraná Delta, fishing is more accessible and close by, ideal for weekend getaways. Here, fishing for dorado means feeling the adrenaline rush just a few kilometers from the big city.

Each region has its own personality, but all share the thrill of encountering the river tiger.

Techniques and equipment for fishing for golden dorado

Fishing for golden dorado requires durable equipment and refined technique.

Fly fishing with streamers: the star technique. Golden dorados respond well to large, colorful flies (yellow, black, red), especially those that mimic tarpon, their favorite prey. It’s recommended to work with quick, aggressive movements to provoke a strike.

Spinning: Ideal for those looking to cover more water. Lures like crankbaits, waving spoons, and jigs with jig heads work well in deep water or fast-moving currents.

Baitcasting: very popular in the Paraná River. It allows you to accurately cast heavy lures near branches and structures, where dorado often lurk.

Recommended Equipment:

Rods: Powerful, ranging from #7 to #9 for fly fishing, with medium to fast action for spinning and baitcasting.

Reels: Sturdy, with reliable drag. For fly fishing, reels with good backing are recommended; for spinning and baitcasting, high-recovery reels.

Lines and Leaders: Intermediate or fast sinking lines for fly fishing; 30–50 lb multifilament for spinning. Always use steel or heavy fluorocarbon leaders, as the teeth of golden dorado cut them easily.

Lures and Flies: Jointed streamers, surface poppers for peak activity, deep-sea lures with contrasting colors.

Practical Tips:

Always cast near natural structures such as submerged branches, rocks, and slides.

Work the lure with quick, irregular movements to imitate fleeing prey.

Be patient: the golden dorado may follow the lure several times before deciding to strike.

In my case, I learned to recognize when a dorado is in «hunting mode»: look at its upraised dorsal fin and the lateral movement it makes before striking. That moment announces that a strike is about to come.

Season and best moments of the year

Golden dorado can be caught year-round, but there are more favorable seasons.

  • Spring (September to November): This is one of the best seasons, as rising water temperatures activate dorado. Here, attacks are more frequent, and medium-sized specimens are abundant.
  • Summer (December to March): Peak activity. The warmth and stable flow levels make this period ideal for intense fishing. Surface attacks and spectacular behavior are common.
  • Autumn (April to June): transition season. Although activity slows slightly, large specimens can still be caught. The dorado takes advantage of this opportunity to feed before winter.
  • Winter (July and August): Activity slows, but doesn’t disappear. While bites are less frequent, this is the time when larger and more aggressive golden dorados tend to emerge.

Key factors for success:

  • River level: A swollen river disperses dorados, while medium or falling river levels concentrate the fish in slides and pools.
  • Weather: Warm, stable days are usually more productive. After intense storms, murky water can complicate fishing, although it sometimes awakens the dorado’s voracity.
  • Forage activity: When mojarras, tarpon, and other prey are on the move, dorado springs into action.
  • Moon phases: Many anglers claim that the new moon and the days leading up to a full moon are especially favorable times.

In my experience, nothing beats those warm spring days when the golden dorado appears restless, raising its dorsal fin before striking. It’s the kind of signal that quickens any angler’s pulse.

Conservation and responsible fishing

The golden dorado is a valuable and fragile resource. Therefore, in most Argentine provinces, fishing is catch-and-release. Releasing the dorado correctly is essential.

It’s a possible way to protect the resource better, allowing people to continue working.

After all, every specimen returned to the water ensures that future generations of fishermen can catch this golden tigerfish.

Fishing Tourism: Lodges and Experiences

In Argentina, there are specialized lodges that offer complete packages: guides, boats, equipment, and accommodations.

Premium lodges: Offering comfort, high-quality cuisine, and expert guides, they’re the ideal option for those looking to combine fishing with relaxation and luxury.

Fishing days in Buenos Aires: perfect for quick getaways to the Paraná Delta. This option allows local and tourist anglers to experience the excitement of dorado fishing without straying too far from the city.

Golden Dorado River Cruiser: A unique experience that navigates the waters of the Paraná River, combining comfort, scenery, and full days dedicated to fishing. This cruise is designed for those who want to enjoy sport fishing on the move, exploring different stretches of the river.
