"I've been fishing for Golden Dorado since I was young, I know what you need to know..."
Who is Emanuel Medina?
Our fly-fishing agency was born and grew alongside my expeditions and explorations in Argentina. Since I was 17, I’ve been traveling throughout the country, learning exclusively from local guides. Today, together with my friends, I founded this agency, where I am the principal owner, while they help and advise me. They also work as guides, like me, organizing and dismantling expeditions or exploring new accommodations. We are all expert fishing guides, expert paddlers, and some also know how to navigate lakes and rivers with motorboats.

Golden Dorado Fly Fishing Argentina: Fishing the Paraná River in Santa Fe and Buenos Aires
Golden dorado fly fishing in Argentina is not just about catching a fish — it’s about facing one of the most aggressive freshwater predators on the planet in its natural environment. The Paraná River, especially in the stretches of Santa Fe and Buenos Aires, offers a unique combination of power, structure, baitfish, and migration routes that make it ideal for fly fishing for golden dorado.
Often referred to as the “tiger of the rivers”, the golden dorado fish (Salminus brasiliensis) represents everything fly anglers look for: violence, speed, aerial fights, and pure adrenaline.
The Golden Dorado: A Freshwater Predator Built for Fly Fishing
Why the Golden Dorado Fish Is Called the “Tiger of the Rivers”
The golden dorado is a true freshwater dorado, perfectly adapted to chasing prey in strong currents. Its compact body, short dorsal fin, and oversized jaw are designed for explosive acceleration rather than cruising. When a dorado commits to a fly, there’s no warning — just impact.
Unlike many freshwater species, dorado don’t sip or inspect. They attack.
In my experience fishing for golden dorado on the fly, especially during active feeding periods, the takes are some of the most violent I’ve ever felt in freshwater. Miss one strike and the fish often turns immediately to attack again.
A Brief History of Fishing for Golden Dorado on the Fly in Argentina
Fly fishing itself has ancient roots, but golden dorado fly fishing in Argentina is relatively recent.
For decades, dorado were caught with bait, lures, or even spears from the riverbanks. Only in the last few decades did fly anglers begin to seriously target them. At the same time, conservation projects expanded throughout the Paraná River basin, allowing researchers and anglers to better understand dorado migration, habitat, and seasonal behavior.
Although dorado are not currently endangered, pressure from pollution and overfishing has made responsible Argentina golden dorado fishing more important than ever. Working alongside local guides and conservation initiatives has shown me how much proper handling and catch-and-release matter for the future of the fishery.
Where to Go Golden Dorado Fly Fishing in Argentina
The Paraná River in Santa Fe
The Santa Fe section of the Paraná is a classic dorado environment:
- Strong main channels
- Islands and submerged structure
- Countless backwaters and side arms (bracitos)
Dorado here move constantly, following baitfish and current seams. Success depends less on casting distance and more on reading water — understanding where ambush points form as water levels rise or fall.
Golden Dorado Fly Fishing Near Buenos Aires
Further south, near Buenos Aires, the river widens and slows, but dorado remain present, especially during warmer months when baitfish move toward the delta.
These zones often mix freshwater with slightly brackish conditions, yet dorado remain fully adapted. Fishing here requires patience and precise fly presentation, but the reward can be surprisingly large fish in accessible water.
Understanding Freshwater Dorado Behavior in the Paraná River
Feeding Frenzies, Sábalo, and Seasonal Movements
The dorado’s main food source is the sábalo, a baitfish that spawns in tributaries and later moves into open water. When dorado detect these schools, everything changes.
I’ve witnessed moments where the river suddenly explodes — baitfish spraying, dorado crashing the surface, pure chaos. Once a feeding frenzy starts, dorado won’t stop until the school is gone.
Main River Channels vs Backwaters (“Bracitos”)
Depending on the season and water level:
- Main channels hold larger, more aggressive fish
- Backwaters provide ambush zones and shelter
Knowing where dorado position themselves isn’t random — it comes from daily contact with the river and understanding migration patterns. That’s where experienced local guides make the difference.
Golden Dorado Fly Fishing Gear: What Really Works
Rods, Lines, and Leaders for Argentina Golden Dorado Fishing
When it comes to gear, two things matter most: strength and control.
- Rods: 8’6” to 9’ rods are ideal. Longer rods make solid hook-sets harder.
- Lines: Floating or intermediate lines depending on depth and current speed.
- Hooks: Must be razor-sharp and extremely strong — dorado have a hard mouth and crushing bite.
Wire Leaders and Why They’re Mandatory
A proper setup includes:
- 30–40 cm (12–16”) steel or titanium leader (40–60 lb)
- Connected to a 40–60 lb fluorocarbon shock tippet
This is where many anglers fail — and where success truly begins...

Learn about flies for the Golden Dorado in Argentina!
We have a great friend who designs incredible flies for Argentina!
Rubén is not just a fly tier; he’s a student of the river. His dorado flies are the result of years of observation of how freshwater dorado hunt, how baitfish behave in different currents, and how light, depth, and water color affect strikes. Every pattern he designs has a purpose, and every choice of material is intentional.
Custom Dorado Flies by Rubén Martín (@ruben_martin_flyfishing)
When it comes to golden dorado fly fishing in Argentina, flies are not just another piece of tackle — they are the difference between follows and violent eats. Over the years, I’ve learned that dorado don’t respond to “generic” patterns. They react to moving flies, pushing water, and triggering pure aggression.
That’s exactly where Rubén Martín stands out.
What makes Rubén’s flies so effective is their balance between realism and provocation. Some imitate injured sábalo perfectly, while others are designed to exaggerate movement, flash, or vibration to force a reaction strike. In my own fishing, I’ve seen dorado completely ignore standard streamers, only to crush one of Rubén’s patterns on the first swing.
His flies excel in Paraná River conditions, especially in Santa Fe and Buenos Aires, where current seams, stained water, and sudden depth changes demand patterns that stay stable while still breathing in the flow. Whether fishing deep structure, swinging through main channels, or targeting aggressive fish in backwaters, his flies consistently perform.
There’s also an artistic side to his work. Each fly looks like a small piece of art, but nothing is there by accident. Durability, hook placement, profile, and weight distribution are all optimized for dorado’s brutal attacks and hard mouths. These are flies built to survive multiple fish — not just look good in a box.
If flies are your most important ally when fishing for golden dorado on the fly, then Rubén Martín becomes your secret weapon. His reputation goes far beyond Argentina, and his work is recognized by fly anglers worldwide who demand performance, not hype.
You can explore his latest patterns and designs on Instagram at @ruben_martin_flyfishing, and if you’re planning a serious golden dorado fly fishing Argentina trip, fishing with his flies gives you a clear edge before you even make your first cast.
